With the heat of summer now a distant memory and Labor Day Weekend quickly approaching, fall in Colorado will soon settle in. Crisp mornings, brilliant colors of the changing foliage and lifted fire-bans make fall the perfect time to get outdoors for hiking, camping and backpacking.

If you have a late season adventure planned, here’s a few tips for doing it right. Use our Camping Gear Checklist and/or Backpacking Gear Checklist to ensure you don’t leave home without critical pieces of gear. At Mountain Side, we guarantee a campfire has never felt as cozy as it will on a fall night beneath the stars.

Fall Camping Essentials

  • Know the weather. Plan for a wide variety of weather patterns with temperatures ranging from near freezing at night on up to the 70’s during the day. You’ll want to pack a variety of gear, ranging from rain flies for your tent and stakes in case of high wind, to a mummy-style sleeping bag rated at least to 20 degrees and an inflatable sleeping pad.
  • Avoid a wardrobe malfunction. Whatever you do, don’t forget a waterproof jacket and an insulated mid-layer, like a fleece. Dressing in layers will keep you warm when the sun goes down; plus, layers are easy to shed when the day heats up.
  • Fuel your meals. Cooler weather calls for warm beverages and increased cooking times in thin mountain air. A proper stove and fuel supply is critical for all fall camping endeavors.
  • Take precautionary measures. The wildfire season was an active one this year. Do your part to ensure no additional fires spark by ensuring campfires are permitted where you set up camp, never leave your campfire unattended and when putting out a fire, soak it until you can handle the embers.
